Ushuaia to Antarctica

Time was, just a few years ago, that travelers with flexible itineraries could show up in Ushuaia and, if an Antarctic cruise was about to leave with empty berths, get a bargain tour of the white continent--say for as little as US$1,000. This season, though, even last-minute trips seem to be going for around US$4,000. Still, if you're in a take-it-or-leave-it position, prices could come down, though it's hard to say how much.

Hey Wayne,

Great blogging!

The two of us are currently in Puerto Montt and really want to get down south to Patagonia, Torres del Paine as soon as possible to start trekking. At the moment we can take the Navimag ferry down from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. The other option which I am not sure is viable will be to go by bus over to Bariloche first, then down through Ruta 40 to El Calafate and enter Torres that way. As we are running out of time, a more efficient route is obviously more desirable. Going by your experience, which way would you say is better at this time of the year?

Many thanks for your help and hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers,

Lu

Lu, the ferry I think is the best option, short of flying - the Ruta 40 trip, if you can arrange it, will be longer than the boat (which is very enjoyable, in my opinion.
